Vitamin B1, or Thiamin as is also commonly referred to, is one of the water soluble B Vitamins, a group of Vitamins generally associated with metabolism and the nervous system.
It is important to remember the difference between water soluble Vitamins and fat soluble Vitamins. Fat soluble Vitamins are stored in the body's fat tissue and can stay there a long time, potentially building to dangerous levels. This is why Vitamin A, D, E and K are found in small doses. Water soluble Vitamins like Thiamin are excreted from the body regularly, so need to be consumed regularly to maintain correct levels. Thiamin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and a normal functioning nervous system, as well as to normal psychological function and the normal function of the heart.
Vitamin B1 can be found a variety of different foods such as wholegrain cereals, brown rice, oats and bread. A number of dairy products as well as seeds, nuts and pulses and red meat all contain good levels of Vitamin B1.
This supplement contains 100mg of Vitamin B1 and although this is within the safe upper limit for daily intake, it is a high dose and is better suited to someone with a diagnosed nutrient deficiency. We do not advise that you take this supplement for more than 6 weeks without direct instruction from you GP as it could cause illness.
